Thanks for the page.

Mass incarceration is a real problem in the US. In this context, it is fair to point out that the 13th amendment is not an absolute bar on slavery.

I dont buy that argument at all . There are a disproportionate number of blacks incacerated , and there are a host of socio-economic and educational
reasons involved . I would question what’s going on in NYC with stop and frisk . Having been caught up myself in the “get tough on crime thing ” in the late 60’s and early 70’s there was no general perception that anyone was trying to turnback civil rights by any drug laws . Abuses were a product of The “war on drugs ” and continues to be .

I’m not an expert on this subject, but as I understand it, the disparity in treatment of crack cocaine and powder cocaine by law enforcement was enormous. Crack was treated much more harshly than powder. I believe this difference has been alleviated a bit in recent years, but still persists.

I am not prepared to assume that the fact that crack is most often used by blacks and powder most often used by whites is irrelevant.

The war on drugs is generally abusive. Generally abusive systems tend to include all sorts of unsavory features, including racism. The war on drugs is no exception.

I would agree with you on that , in fact prison sentences would attest to it . Having said that , I would not conider that to be an attemopt to turn back or diminish the 13th Amendment , as Alexander contends . The drug war legislation was not about that at all , BUT -the enforcement of those laws in many instances can be considered racist .

You seem to be confusing intent with outcome.
